ABOUT US

A refuge for an endemic species in danger of extinction

The axolotl or ajolote (from náhuatl language) - (Ambystoma mexianum), is an endemic amphibian of the Valley of Mexico. Basin that due to pollution, urbanization and the insertion of invasive species in its place of origin, has been declared in danger of extinction in its habitat .

The axolotl is one of the most emblematic animals in Mexico, it has impressive regenerative characteristics, it is capable of regenerating an amputated limb from 0 to 100% and making it functional in just 60 days, in addition, it is a bioindicator that tells us the health of the ecosystem where it lives, among many other characteristics.
AXOLOTITLÁN was born out of the need for people to have a face-to-face approach with this magical amphibian that is still not known by many Mexicans and by people from other parts of the world; We provide information on the causes of its extinction, current situation and the way in which they can be added to remove it from this category.
The information we share is provided in a simple and personalized way, regardless of age, language or profession, we can all have an encounter with them since we think that we are all part of the solution.

Our activities

Since our inception in 2017, we’ve gatherd understanding about needs and directions required for success of our cause. As of today, we have managed to consolidate and focus different efforts, building a tangible solution through our activities: shelter and care of specimens, environmental education, medical network, biocultural tours, pedagogical and creative collaborations in addition to the creation of the first National Museum of the Ajolote.

Shelter and care of specimens

The specimens on display can be viewed by visitors, in addition to learning more through specific and fun talks. The quarantined specimens are cared for and monitored to ensure their health and well-being.

Environmental education

We give courses, workshops and conferences in schools or events that have to do with local consumption, ecology, rescue of species, etc.

Medical network

We advise and give consultation and treatment to those who have a problem with an axolotl, although we do not recommend having them as pets, we know that there are not many centers or specialists where they can attend to attend to them.

Biocultural tours

With our allies in Xochimilco we carry out responsible tourism where we seek to inspire children, young people and tourists to enjoy and live together in this area (house of the axolotl in wildlife) in a respectful and garbage-free way.

Educational and creative collaborations

Registration and generation of digital, written, photographic information, videos, documentaries and any material that helps to disseminate about the preservation of the species from the hand of those interested in obtaining information for their artistic, research or dissemination projects.
